About Banking in Vietnam
Vietnam's banking and credit system in the early days was founded and protected by the French colonialists through the Indo China bank. Things have dramatically changed ever since. The foundation of the Vietnam National Bank was often attributed to be the result of the struggle process to develop an independent, and autonomous monetary and credit system, marking a new development step, i.e, changing the quality of the national monetary and credit sector. On January 21, 1960, the Vietnam National Bank was renamed as the State Bank of Vietnam. The State Bank of Vietnam is the central bank of the country.
The World Economic Forum, in its report - The Global Competitiveness Report 2010–2011, has ranked Vietnam at # 96 with a score of 4.7 in terms of soundness of banks in the country. The rankings dropped to #125 with a score of 4.2 in 2011-12.
Foreign investment limit into national banks of Vietnam is currently set to 30 percent. The government is working on a law that would include this FDI cap.
